Since its founding in 2000, the Purple Hearts program has provided assistance to thousands of women and children throughout Southern California rebuilding their lives from domestic violence.
We partner with domestic violence shelters throughout the region to provide programming focused on self-sufficiency skills and access to resources that their clients need to successfully and sustainably rebuild their lives.
Through this new approach, we have seen a drastic reduction in the recidivism rate as women are now empowered to move forward on their journey and establish safe and productive lives for themselves and their children.
Stories of Changed Lives
We named our program Purple Hearts after the medal given for bravery to the wounded in battle. These women have survived a terrorizing war and shown enormous courage to rescue themselves and their children from life-threatening abuse. We salute you!.

Monthly Events for Families in Shelter
Events are held every month for moms and children housed temporarily in DV shelters to educate and entertain, provide crafts and delicious meals, and share hope for a brighter future.

Self-Sufficiency Workshops for Families in Transition
Our 12-month Purple Hearts Self-Sufficiency Workshop Program provides the life skills training needed for financial literacy, access to jobs and training, a network of community resources and, ultimately, support in securing permanent housing.

Relocation Support into Permanent Housing
When families complete our Purple Hearts Workshop Program and transition out of shelter, Purple Hearts provides resources for permanent housing and donates complete furniture packages and household items to help families start a new life with all the basic essentials.

Domestic Violence 101
Domestic violence is defined by the U.S. Department of Justice as a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner, whether in a physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological way. This can include any behavior that is used to intimidate, threaten, hurt, isolate, frighten or coerce someone.
